My Safe Florida Home Program: Strengthen Your Home with White Hat Windows & Doors
What Is the My Safe Florida Home Program?
The My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) Program is a statewide initiative designed to help Florida homeowners fortify their homes against hurricanes. The program provides free wind mitigation inspections and grant funding for approved home improvements that increase wind resistance and can also lower your homeowners insurance premiums.
Florida’s hurricane seasons can be severe, and proper preparation is key. By participating in this program, homeowners can make strategic upgrades — including impactrated windows and doors — to better protect their homes and investments.
How the Program Works
The MSFH program operates in two main phases:
1. Free Wind Mitigation Inspection
Eligible homeowners can receive a free hurricane mitigation inspection at no cost and with no obligation. Inspectors evaluate your home’s current windresistant features and recommend improvements such as window and door upgrades, roof reinforcements, secondary water barriers, and more.
This inspection alone can be valuable — you can share the report with your insurance provider to ensure you’re receiving all available discounts.
2. Grant Funding for Approved Upgrades
After your inspection, if your home qualifies, you can apply for a matching grant of up to $10,000 toward approved hurricane mitigation upgrades. For every $1 you spend, the state contributes $2 — up to the program’s maximum.
There are also Low-Income Grants that may cover eligible improvements with no matching contribution required.
Who Is Eligible?
Before applying for a grant, your home must first receive a wind mitigation inspection. To be eligible for the program:
Your home must:
- Be a site built, single-family home or townhouse
- Be owner-occupied with a homestead exemption
- Have had its initial construction permit issued before January 1, 2008
- Have an insured value of no more than $700,000 (some low-income exemptions may apply)
Properties such as condos, multifamily rentals, retirement homes, and mobile or manufactured homes are not eligible.
What Improvements Qualify?
Once your home’s inspection report identifies recommended improvements, eligible upgrades may include:
Windows & Doors (Opening Protection)
- Impact-rated windows
- Enhanced exterior doors, including reinforced entry and garage doors
These upgrades are especially effective at reducing wind and debris damage during hurricanes and are among the most popular items funded through the program.
Additional Structural Enhancements
- Roof to deck and roof to wall reinforcement
- Secondary water resistance barriers
- Storm-rated roofing materials
These improvements help your entire home resist uplift and water intrusion during severe weather.
